About Driving Instructor Training

To become a qualified driving instructor, you need to pass three tests set by the DVSA. Our training courses offer a comprehensive approach to help you succeed in all three parts, including access to a Part Qualified Instructor (PDI) licence before your final Instructional Ability assessment.

Part 1: Theory and Hazard Perception
This test is divided into two sections. The first part involves answering 100 multiple-choice questions within 1.5 hours. The second part consists of watching 14 hazard perception videos, where you’ll need to identify developing hazards as quickly as possible.

To pass the theory test, you must achieve:
• At least 85 out of 100 overall
• At least 20 out of 25 in each of the four categories

For the hazard perception test, you need a minimum score of 57 out of 75. Passing both sections is required to complete Part 1.

Part 2: Driving Ability
This is an advanced practical driving test where you’ll need to demonstrate exceptional driving skills and a solid understanding of the Highway Code. The test lasts about an hour and includes five key elements: an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions, general driving ability, manoeuvres, and independent driving.

To pass Part 2, you must:
• Commit no more than six driving faults
• Avoid any serious or dangerous faults

Part 3: Instructional Ability
This part involves delivering a real driving lesson for one hour, where you’ll be evaluated on 17 areas of competence, categorized into lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies. After the lesson, the examiner will review your performance and provide your results.

To pass, you must achieve either a grade A or B. Upon passing Part 3, you can apply for your first ADI badge within 12 months. If unsuccessful, you can retake the test within two years of passing Part 1.

How do i get approved for driving instructor?

You’ll need to pass the approved driving instructor part 1 and part 2 exams. You’ll then get a licence to give instruction and legally charge for lessons. You must also pass the part 3 exam to get onto the register of approved driving instructors.
